Why Ceramic Bearings Are the Best Choice for Air-Driven Dental Handpieces?
In modern dentistry, air-driven dental handpieces rely on precision miniature bearings to support the turbine rotor and dental bur at extremely high rotational speeds. At speeds approaching 400,000 rpm in some models, even small changes in rolling-element mass, bearing geometry, lubrication, or assembly accuracy can influence vibration, noise, temperature, and operating stability.Consequently, manufacturers increasingly consider hybrid ceramic bearings with silicon nitride (Si₃N₄) balls when designing high-speed dental handpieces. However, ceramic material alone does not guarantee superior performance, because the complete bearing system must match the handpiece’s speed, load, lubrication, sterilization, and service requirements.
