Frequently Asked Questions
What is Metal Injection Molding (MIM) and how does it work?
Metal Injection Molding (MIM) is an advanced manufacturing process that combines the design flexibility of plastic injection molding with the strength and integrity of powdered metallurgy. Fine metal powder is mixed with a thermoplastic binder to create a feedstock, which is then injected into a precision mold cavity. The resulting “green part” undergoes debinding (binder removal) and high-temperature sintering (up to 1,400°C) to produce a dense, near-net-shape metal component with mechanical properties comparable to wrought materials.
What materials can MIMCustom work with?
We work with a comprehensive range of MIM-compatible materials including: 316L/17-4PH stainless steels, low-alloy steels, tool steels, titanium and titanium alloys (Ti-6Al-4V), tungsten and tungsten heavy alloys, copper, nickel-based superalloys (Inconel), cobalt-chrome alloys, soft magnetic materials (Fe-Si, Fe-Ni), and custom alloy formulations for specialized applications.
What are the advantages of Silicon Nitride (Si3N4) bearing balls over steel?
Silicon Nitride (Si3N4) bearing balls offer significant advantages: they are 40% lighter than steel, significantly harder, electrically insulating, and non-magnetic. They excel in high-speed applications by reducing centrifugal loads and friction, and can operate in extreme temperatures and corrosive environments where steel bearings would fail.
What is the difference between Alumina and Zirconia ceramics?
Alumina (Al2O3) is highly cost-effective, offering excellent hardness, electrical insulation, and high-temperature stability. Zirconia (ZrO2) features much higher fracture toughness and bending strength, making it ideal for applications requiring impact resistance and high mechanical stress, though it has a lower maximum operating temperature than Alumina.
What size parts can you produce with MIM?
MIM is ideal for small to medium-sized precision parts, typically ranging from 0.1 grams to 200 grams. The optimal weight range is under 50 grams. Parts can have dimensions up to approximately 100mm in any direction. MIM excels at producing complex geometries – including thin walls, internal channels, undercuts, and fine features – that would be impossible or prohibitively expensive with conventional machining.
What is the typical lead time and minimum order quantity?
Prototypes: 7-10 business days from approved drawings. Production tooling: 3-4 weeks. Mass production: 4-6 weeks depending on complexity and volume. Our standard MOQ is 5,000 pieces per design, though we offer flexible arrangements for initial trial orders and ongoing production programs. We provide detailed DFM (Design for Manufacturability) analysis within 24 hours of receiving your 3D drawings.
How does MIM compare to CNC machining and investment casting?
Compared to CNC machining, MIM achieves 30-50% cost reduction for complex parts at volumes above 10,000 pieces, uses 95%+ of raw material (vs. 30-60% for CNC), and can produce geometries impossible to machine. Compared to investment casting, MIM offers superior dimensional accuracy (±0.3% vs. ±0.5%), finer surface finishes, thinner walls, and tighter tolerances without secondary machining. MIM is the optimal choice when you need complex shapes, high precision, and medium-to-high production volumes.
Can you manufacture non-standard customized ceramic structural parts?
Yes, custom structural parts are our specialty. We provide full DFM (Design for Manufacturability) support. Because ceramics shrink significantly (up to 20%) during sintering, our engineers use advanced simulation software to design the initial green-state tooling, ensuring the final fired part meets your exact non-standard dimensional tolerances.
